Seattle’s Amazon may have had its big plans for its Web Services division set back last week when scores of websites and Internet services like Foursquare and Reddit crashed or offered limited availability Thursday because of problems at a data center run by Amazon.com.

Amazon.com has become the leading provider of this type of “utility” computing, where customers pay only for the computing power and storage they need. Anyone with a credit card can begin using it. Competitors include Rackspace Hosting Inc. and Microsoft’s Azure platform.

Up till now Amazon Web Services were generally considered reliable because it uses vast numbers of Servers that are spread out in different data centers throughout the country. But Thursday’s failure as unusual as it was revealed vulnerabilities in the widespread reliance on Amazon Web Services.

In a statement Amazon said the trouble started early in the morning at a data center in Northern Virginia. The problems remained ongoing Thursday afternoon.
