Improve your online backup performance with better bandwith management

Many users have concerns about limited bandwith and their online backup solutions. Maxing out your systems bandwith can slow system response times and degrade functionality .Bandwith like other system resources a can be managed and optimised.

To optimise bandwith and keep your data backup software working smoothly follow these 8 simple rules;

1) Any unused bandwidth does not carry over to the next month . So that means you cant save bandwith for those times you might need a little extra. It’s best to manage your traffic well within the limitations of your network.

2) It’s best to turn off all the automatic software updates. Yes I know they save a lot of time and can increase the reliability of your system, but with many updates taking up 500 MB or more, it’s best to do them durring off peak hours.Also schedule all nonessential software routines for off hours and weekends and make sure you schedule manual updates inorder to maintain the integrity of your network.

Our online backup software gives you the abilty to schedule your data backup whenever it is most optimal and allows you to backup certain files seperatly and at different times from each other. After your initial full data backup is done our system runs on an incremental basis,creating full sets of data for each time you run the backup software.

3) Whether it’s YouTube videos, Netflix, Hulu or even iTunes,or any training videos most video providers give you the option of HD picture quality while viewing. It is best to avoid HD in business networks because at 720p, it is a bandwith hog maxing out on your bandwith, slowing down systems performance and limiting other resources.

4) Beware synchronization software, anytime a file is changed the bandwidth meter is up and running. Consider saving your documnets to your document folder and than copying it into a seperate sync folder only upon the completion of the work.

5) Initial backups of larger sizes should be done to a hard drive .PCIC gives custumers the ability to upload the entire initial backup to a disk drive and then we ship it to our secure data center or you can schedule the entire initial data backup for evenings and weekends when the demands on your system are less.

6) Watch out for bandwidth vampires at home or in the office . Some devices use your Internet connection, even in off hours like Security systems. DVRs, and Blu-ray players all use data when online, as well as game systems. In the office you may have various data feeds these are all small but incombination with other issues they can add up.

7) Close all those remote connections.Software like LogMeIn, GotoMyPC, Timbuktu and even Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are great ways to maximise your ptoductivity and get work done. It is a real convience to start your work instantly and avoid the hassles of authentication and booting up the application. However dont get sloppy not only is this a security issue of some concern, but an “always up” connection can suck up your bandwidth. So remember when you are finished to log out everytime.

8 ) Finally make sure your Wi-Fi connection is secure and password protected. As well as the security risks neighbors weather business or personal may inadvertently connect to your Wi-Fi network any time of the day or night, and accidently eat away at your bandwith.
