Why Your Business Needs to Ditch Backup Tapes
Dec 14th
Many businesses do not address a company’s most precious assets: its data. Surprisingly, most companies find themselves unprepared when data loss impacts their business. Today, more and more businesses report successfully switching from tape to remote managed backup service, which restores data over 8 times faster! Whats more, the cost is lower.
If you dont regularly restore your tape backups, then how do you know they are not corrupted? You would be surprised how many times someone tries to restore a tape only to find the information missing, or in the worse, corrupted. Most tape backup problems are caused by the tape drives & the tapes. So get rid of them!
Why Servers Crash and How to Avoid It
Jul 25th
Servers are now at the center of corporate data networks and process electronic transactions around the clock, so companies can’t afford unexpected server failures. Crashed Web servers can create “a huge financial loss and a huge customer-satisfaction loss.”
If you take some preventive measures, you can avoid server failure to an extent. These preventive measures are as follows:
1. Although hard drive failure is not a fully avoidable situation, it can be minimized up to a limit. With appropriate RAID array, supported by mirroring, you can eliminate certain data loss situations.
2. Server failure is generally caused by heat or excruciating surroundings. Regular use of servers in environment with high heat throughout could damage the hard drive. So it is important to maintain the proper heat ventilation.
3. Server crashes are usually preceded by error log notifications, which means if a technician is monitoring the server, he will be notified of a problem before a crash occurs, thus allowing him to prevent it. This must be part of regular server maintenance plan.
4. If you are relocating the servers from one place to another, more care is required. The server hard drive failure in a head on crash is generally caused because it suffers a significant shock. Thus it is recommended to pack the hard drive properly.
5. Regular and proper backup of critical data eliminates the hazards of data loss. It ensures that if server failure occurs, you can retrieve data without any extra cost and without requiring Data Recovery Services.

How long will your hard drive last?
Mar 27th
Many clients ask us how long they can expect their hard drive to last.
There are many factors that affect the life of a hard drive. Some factors that impact the life span of a hard drive are price and temperature.
An inexpensive computer will not have the longest lasting hard drive. Major computer manufacturers spend considerable resources on air flow and cooling. A drive that overheats frequently can fail within days. An adequately cooled drive can usually last between 3 to 5 years, however there are no guarantees a hard drive will not fail in the first few month of work. Do not trust your data to an inadequate cooling system. Technology can fail at any time making it vital that you back up your important data remotely and on a regular basis.
Laptops have less room for cooling systems. Data stored on a laptop is especially at risk. Statistics indicate that 1 out of every 5 laptops are in danger of losing data due to theft, loss or damage. If you use a laptop you should remote back up your data vigilantly.
While the cost of hard drives goes down, the value of your data is priceless. Factor in the years of work that can be lost when data disappears and our online data backup proves to be the best insurance.

No Database + No Backup = No Business
Feb 17th
JournalSpace, which has been around for almost six years now as a prominent blogger website, is done. Due to a catastrophic data loss, either due to software error or malicious intent, the website managers have lost the entire contents of the blogs stored upon it.
…
JournalSpace has ceased to be, following a wipe-out of the main database for which there was no back-up in place. According to the JournalSpace blog , the database was overwritten as a result of a malicious act from a disgruntled ex-employee.
It was the guy handling the IT (and, yes, the same guy who I caught stealing from the company, and who did a slash-and-burn on some servers on his way out) who made the choice to rely on RAID as the only backup mechanism for the SQL server. He had set up automated backups for the HTTP server which contains the PHP code, but, inscrutibly, had no backup system in place for the SQL data. The ironic thing here is that one of his hobbies was telling everybody how smart he was.
The company set up a Twitter account which it used for updates, and reading the messages in reverse chronological order is telling enough. If your blog was hosted on JournalSpace, you can visit this helpful blog post with instructions on how to save most of your content and comments using Google Cache.
JournalSpace had apparently been around for 6 years, and will now be releasing its source code to the open source community, and possibly sell off the domain name and trademarks.
By the way, when’s the last time you backed up all the data on your computer?
